Thera and Clic develop a new online correction service for scientific and technical texts written in Catalan

The computational language company , a spin-off from the University of Barcelona (UB) and located at the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB, Barcelona Science Park), in collaboration with researchers from the Computer Linguistics Centre () of the UB, have developed a new text correction system. This system provides immediate online correction of scientific and technical terms in Catalan. The result of an agreement between the UB, the DURSI and Termcat, the new terminology system, called SisCoTTerm, is currently being tested and is expected to become available at the end of 2005.

SisCoTTerm aims to facilitate correction and also to contribute to the organization of publishing in Catalan and the standardization and introduction of new terms, as it allows users to consult whether scientific and technical terms are included in the Termcat database or in that managed by the UB (UBTerm).

To use SisCoTTerm, the text to be corrected is introduced on a special form and in seconds the system identifies the words included in the two abovementioned databases and informs the user as to the database in which the term is found and its context of use. Furthermore, the system also indicates words that are not recognised and that could be mistakes or new terms that should be standardized. In the latter case, the corrector sends the term to a provisional database, which is later examined by specialists. In addition, SisCoTTerm also identifies proper names and spelling mistakes. In the near future, this system will also be extended to correct grammatical mistakes.

A pioneering system in Catalan and Spanish, SisCoTTerm will be available to all the universities that comprise the “Institut Joan Lluís Vives”, thereby contributing to the publishing activity of these centres.
